Up to 50% of males will experience a degree of hair loss by the time they reach their 50s. Disappearing scalp hair takes a few different forms, such as shedding, thinning, and bald patches. Besides male pattern baldness (androgenic alopecia), here are the most prevalent types of hair loss for males: receding hairline, thinning crown, severe stress (telogen effluvium), and alopecia areata. Unfortunately, more than 50% of females will experience significant and visible hair loss in their lifetime. The most common cause is female pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia). Other types of hair loss females experience include: diffuse hair loss (chronic telogen effluvium), severe stress (telogen effluvium), alopecia areata, traction alopecia, and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).
